new things // fabric flowers
after a great art trail, i’ve been back in the shedspace brainstorming new ideas as well as as having poorly children off school to look after. it’s been a bit of a disjointed time. the lurgy has got me now too but last week i had the energy to do some sewing.
i found a decorative way of using some of my cotton off-cuts + incorporating my love of florals = fabric flowers! i have a lot of odd-sized block printed fabrics in drawers + baskets in my shed which i can’t part with in case brainwaves like this pop up. over the years i’ve made eye pillows, coiled coasters + door stops with the cotton off-cuts. so i was back there again rummaging through the basket of left over scraps from lampshade making + collected some yellow pieces to hand stitch petals. i drew a flower template first with cardboard to make them all the same size.
i added floristry wire inside the petals so they could bend + move once sewn up. the stitching on the sides is rough + scrappy but i quite like that look + feel to them. there’s texture rather than perfection.
after the first bash i could then see what to tweak to the design. mainly it was me + my cack-handedness! i carried on + made the two below - same colours but still one-of-a-kind.
like with making anything new; it’s been an interesting + enjoyable process. from the initial sketches, choosing the materials, working on adjustments + then simply enjoying the creative part of making to then holding the finished piece.
the pottery vase made by jane on the art trail was a perfect fit.
i hope to be adding some more new blooms to my webshop very soon…
